HermannHesse (1877 - 1962) wrote DasGlasperlenSpiel, (The Glass Bead Game ISBN:080501246X), during the years 1932 - 1943. It was published in 1943 by Fretz & Wasmuth, Zurich, after being rejected by the NaZis. In 1946 Hesse won the NobelPrize in Literature http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1946/index.html:

DasGlasperlenSpiel is regarded as his masterpiece.
